Definitions

At constant volume,

CV=(UT)V.C_V=\left(\frac{\partial U}{\partial T}\right)_V.

At constant pressure,

CP=(HT)P.C_P=\left(\frac{\partial H}{\partial T}\right)_P.

Interpretation

Heat capacity measures how much energy is required to change temperature under specified constraints.
